Busted Bogie Enterprises Neural Network Version 8 robot - BUSTED! -$1,318

Mr. William Boatwright has come up with an update to his previous Neural Network (NN) EA, and has a demo program download available here.

In addition, a 60 minute interview is available to listen to on this site: http://asktheeaexperts.com/archives/

Download and listen to it, and watch my live testing results of the new NNv8 EA here.

2008-09-08: This EA seems to be having a lot of problems being successful, and I believe it is due to using Alpari UK servers. As a result, I have created a new account on my IBFX site profile, which is based in the USA, and perhaps that will give this EA better results. I have re-started this EA as a result.

NOTE: I changed the risk to 0.5 from 5.0 which means this EA should only risk 0.5% of the account per trade.

Bogie is really going on a losing streak here. I have to admit, I think this EA would perform better if it opened trades in the OPPOSITE direction of what it is doing now!

It seems that Neural Network EA might be the way to go as this gent recieved second place in the EA competition for 2007. I don't know if he used this particular EA in the competition however the winner used NN and did very well.

Is there a laymen explanation for what it is and how it works?

Also I tested this EA and got some positive results on back test with optimisation (FXDD as broker )

This EA is not the same as his winning version. At the time of the championship, he was leasing the winning EA to folks. I tried it at the time and did not experience very good results. It was because of his EA that I decided to start the original site.

After that he came out with this version. So here I am testing it.

I suspect he has an explanation on his site.

I regret to say that this is not a neural net EA.
It uses a mathematical approximation of the output of a single neural net output for one particular period (some time ago).
The resulting non-evolving indicator behaves similarly to a Slow Stochastic, so works great in some ranges and minor trend reversals but will lose bavdly outside these conditions
I would love it if worked - I would buy it! But....

I do believe I saw some discussion about this as well, and the fact that it was code that really was just based off of optimization routines and was not dynamic in any way. That is unfortunate.

I believe the current so-called NN indicators are based off one snap-shot output from a NN generator, for one period... back in 2003!

And here is the link I was reading. There is some discussion over at Forex TSD which indicates that Mr. Boatrights code is an EXACT copy of this code:

http://cortex.snowcron.com/forex_nn.htm

I downloaded this code and was able to compile it within just a few minutes. Other have done the same and compared testing results to the NueralNetwork 8 and they both place the exact same trades apparently...

This code is freely available, so I am amazed he would take something open source and release it for profit. I know he has visited this site, so it would be nice for him to come and clarify the situation in case I am mistaken.

Yes you are correct about the origins of the indicator
Its not something I can easily comment on as people will assume its commercial rivalry!
Actually I really wish Wackena had something special...
I WOULD BUY IT AND PUBLISIZE IT
Developing EA's is such HARD WORK, that I wish someone else would find that Holy Grail...
Looks like I keep on adding to my own portfolio!

Nothing wrong with including open-source in a project - its almost unavoidable in a professional EA as at least part of it will need to do what others (which might have been you, as an author) have done before.
After all, a lot of my code is published!

Issues are:-
Claiming & naming an EA as NN - when it's (effectively) a Slow Stochastic on fixed parameters
Everyone assuming that success in the Autotrade Championship must mean something in the real world

I think the Championship is an excellent idea & should continue but...
Keep in mind the Championship runs on MT data, which is kind to EA's, also
the rules favour near-scalping range -traders that will whipsaw out on a live single-broker data feed
